Walleyes are a type of fish that is always found in a group. They belong to the perch family and feed mostly on minnows. They also perch on young fish of all the species. These show schooling behavior though they can also distribute themselves over a wide range. You should try to find a group that is feeding and biting actively. The smaller walleyes are the best, especially those who weigh three to four pounds. They taste great and you can have a long and thick strip of boneless meat from each side.

You can use a number of methods to catch the walleyes however three methods are commonly used. A lead head hook is taken and a minnow is attached to it.  A night crawler or a leech can also be used in place of a minnow. After casting they are retrieved close to the bottom. They can also be fished vertically either off the bottom or along the side of the boat.

You can use bait that is tipped with a colored spinner blade. It is at the back of bounce-bottom sinker. It is trolled fast enough so that the blade spins and sinker is close to the bottom. You can also use some crank fish baits like a wooden or plastic lure that is shaped like a minnow. You can use cast and retrieve them or troll them after a boat. The fish is listless in cold conditions so if you want to catch the fish, fishing jig is your safest bet. However as the temperature increases, the fish become active and using crank baits for fishing is the best option in such situations.

You have at least two fishing rods as you advance towards the walleye angling game.  Using a monofilament of six or eight pound test you can progress to a rod for jigs and a spinning reel. Using a monofilament of ten or seventeen pound test you will also have a rod that is used for crank baits and bottom bouncers and a bait which is open spool for casting reel. A number of colors are available for crank baits and bottom bouncers, the best ones are perch finish, silver, blue and chartreuse. However color pink should not be used.

Walleyes can be caught from shore. You can also catch them by wading and casting for them in water. To get some experience in catching the walleyes, you can go fishing with a walleye fisherman. You can go with them and can learn a number of techniques to catch the fish.

Catching a walleye is a fun filled experience. It is an exciting and enthralling experience whether you are new to it or an experienced person! So if you want to have fun, fishing walleye is just the right thing for you.
