Posted by: blog Muskies is a popular sport fish which is found in United States and Canada. It has two main varieties- the Tiger Muskie and Muskellunge. Tiger muskie has the characteristics of a Northern Pike and a Muskellunge. A Muskellunge can be quite big. It can even achieve a length of 48 inches. They are commonly found in the 40 to 50 pound range. A number of such muskellunge are caught by anglers every year.
Muskie likes to trap its prey just like the Pike. They are also quite aggressive. Muskie is usually found around weedy lines, rocky shoals, deep holes or river current. They can also be found around the shoals of smaller fishes. You need to troll fast with big lures and heavy line in order to catch Muskie. However you can catch much more by refining and retuning your strategy. There are a number of refined strategies which can help you in catching the fishes. Here are some of the strategies which will help you out in fishing: The preferable time for catching the muskie is the early spring as the fish wades in shallow water of five to six feet depth in search for food. You must troll fast in order to catch a fish. However never do go down the lake at a very high speed. You can catch a number of Muskees at a high speed but you can catch much more if you go slowly. Most of the anglers use eight inch long crank baits and swim whizzes to catch Musky however you can catch twice more with a four or five inch orange Rapala or floating fire-tiger. The joined Rapalas are even better. You should use the fire-tiger during the day time and orange Rapala during the dark. However you can go for silver or brown color in case you are unable to catch the fish using the fire-tiger and orange Rapala. The characteristics of the line also have an important role to play. You are likely to catch more number of fishes if your line is thin rather than when it is thick. You fishing efforts can produce different results depending on the visibility of your line. Use an eight pound dark green line in a water body where there is less number of weeds like a lake. However you need to use a ten pound line if the area is weedy or has sharp rocks. You are likely to get a huge hit if you use a test which is more than fifteen pound. You must always leave out a 50 feet line because the muskies are quite sensitive to the boat engine sound. You can have the lures at the same distance in case you are angling in a group. This will help in attracting the fish because it will appear like a school of fish. Muskie has highly developed smell organs. They are thus very sensitive to human smell and also to smell of chemicals like oil and gasoline. You need to wash your hands with sugar before handling the lures. You must also put fish scent over the lure. You can also add salt to the lure. The receptors are located at the bottom of the jaws of the Muskie. Positively charged water particles are formed when the feeder fish swims through the water and these receptors respond quickly to them. So add salt to enhance your fish scent further. For best results use an eight to ten pound dark green line. You should use jointed lures of medium size with orange, chartreuse and fire-tiger colors. You must never put gas on your hands as the muskie is quite sensitive to it. It is thus important to use fish scent in abundance. You are likely to found muskies at river mouths and deeper holes where there is a large number of feeder fish. You will also find them along weed beds and rocky points. So use all the refined strategies and see the difference yourself!
